Summer 2007
This term saw us honing Scouting skills once again.

Thursday 19th April 2007 : Planning

The evening started with May Burrows awarding Chief Scouts Awards to Rachelle and Lyndsey. Lettie was then invested into the Unit and we were sent off into pairs. First each Explorer had to design his own gravestone with the things by which he or she would like to be remembered. Next, each had to design the gravestone for their partner, which led to some more realistic epitaphs. We finished with some games.
Three gravestones

Thursday 26th April 2007 : Orienteering [1]

We all walked up to the Hermitage, where we were divided into three groups of five Explorers. Each group was given a map with orienteering points marked and we set off in the dark to try too find the points marked. Lack of torches [what happened to 'Be Prepared'?] meant a complete failure by every group, so we went back to the church hall, where we were told that we would have to do it again but when there was more light.

Thursday 3rd May 2007 : A night on the town

We all met up at the Church of St Andrew and St George in George Street, where we were divided into three groups. We had a number of questions to answer on the way back to the Hall. We also had to keep our eyes open to see which leaders were (a) carrying a newspaper, (b) wearing a hat and (c) carrying an umbrella. What leaders?!

Thursday 10th May 2007 : First aid [1]

David (the leader) had injured his foot but had had it dealt with in hospital rather than letting the Explorers loose on it. Instead, the body that had been found underneath the church in the 25th Morningside's Scout Store was brought up to the Hall. Lettie explained that she was not breathing, so we all took turns to give her mouth-to-mouth, then having an go at cardiac resuscitation.

Thursday 17th May 2007 :

The bench record beaten We all met at the Bonaly entrance to the Pentlands Country Park. A general lack of leaders meant that instead of instruction in navigation skills, we went for a walk around the reservoirs and back to Bonaly. It was a fine evening and we made friends with a labrador who took some persuasion to go back to its owner. We finished up by trying to break the Bonaly bench-sitting record. The last time we attempted this was in May 2005.

Thursday 24th May 2007 : First aid [2]

Lettie instructed us on putting on bandages this evening. We split into pairs and practised putting on slings and bandaging up head wounds.

Thursday 31st May 2007 : End of exams party

We started off with a game from Martin before Alan started us off with 'Chinese mimes'. We divided into two teams and each had to do a single-person mime for the first person in the other team. They then had to copy the mime for the next member of the team. Shona's team tried to mime 'the information super-highway' after which Holly's team mimed Shona's bicycle crash from the camp at Meggernie. Shona, who was the last Explorer in her team to see it had no idea what it was until it was demonstrated first-hand.

Thursday 7th June 2007 : Orienteering [2]

The evening being much lilghter than in April, we went up to the Hermitage once again and were divided into four teams this time. This time we could actually see the points, though finding them all was another matter.

Thursday 14th June 2007 : Sky-ride

We met up at the Ratho climbing wall (now the 'Edinburgh International Climbing Arena) and went up to the top floor to be set off on the sky-ride.
