Spring 2007
This term saw another skiing
expedition, two bothy nights and some tetra-dimensional evenings.

Thursday 11th January 2007 : Planning
The
evening started with May Burrows awarding Chief Scouts Awards to
Alastair, Nick and Dan. May also awarded Martin with his Wood Badge. We
were then sent out into the night by Alan to try to check some of the
questions for the Morningside Monopoly that we are running for the
Scouts of North Morningside at the start of February. We had been out
only a quarter of an hour or so when the heavens opened. Some groups
came back in, though one team of stalwarts had to be called back. We
finished with some games.

Thursday 18th January 2007 : Hiking Away
Alan
introduced a new badge to us, the Hikes Away Badge. We then spent some
time working out what hikes we had done as Scouts and Explorers and
completing relevant forms. We then had a vote on membership of the
Programme Planning Committee and the Expeditions Committee. We finished
with four of the boys giving a demonstration of standing with no feet
on the ground, as per last summer's expedition, and the girls matched
it with the reverse (roll over the image to see the original).

Thursday 25th January 2007 : Burns Night
This
was a relaxed sort of evening and we welcomed three new Explorers,
Rowan, Max and Logan who have come to us from the 25th Morningside. We
hope that they will be very happy with us. Mop ralliled the other
Scouters into the kitchen and started on preparing a Burns Supper. In
the meantime, the Explorers, together with those leaders that could be
spared at any particular moment, going into the 25th's meeting for the
Moving On ceremony. We all went back to the small hall and had a great
Burns Supper. Toasts were made but no real speeches made… maybe next
year!
20th - 21st January 2007 : Morningside Monopoly
We
gathered in the kitchen of Cluny Centre at 7:00 pm and divided into
groups that would man various points in Morningside to which Scouts
from the 9th, 25th and 103rd Troops would visit in their aim to gain a
Monopoly of streets in Morningside. Martin and Alan then explained the
rules to the troops and they were out. Most stayed near to the Cluny
Centre and thus failed to buy the greater number of streets. A group
from the 25th won with a rather larger amount of money than was
feasible within the rules, but they won the prize anyway.
Friday 2nd February 2007 : Morningside Monopoly

Thursday 8th February 2007 : Skiing at Hillend
We all met at Hillend and, after
some discussion with the girls behind the counter, agreed that paying
for one hour (which really meant ski-ing for an hour and a quarter) was
better than paying for two hours (which really meant ski-ing for an
hour and twenty minutes). Alan walked his new puppy up by the slopes
and then brought her down to be admired and petted by the Explorers. We
shall no doubt be seeing more of her as time goes by.
Thursday 22nd Feb 2007 : Hike planning
We
divided into three groups based upon whether we were planning Bronze or
Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award or Platinum or Diamond Chief Scouts
Award hikes. Route plans were completed for a hike in the Scottish
Borders and up Glen Tilt from Blair Atholl to Braemar.
Thursday 1st March 2007 : St David's Day
To be completed!
23rd
- 25th March 2007 : Glentress Mountain Biking
On
a glorious weekend 6 North Face Explorer Scouts and 2 Explorer Scouts
joining us from Warrington had a weekend staying at Hope Bothy near
Glentress along with Mountain Biking. After a Friday night trying to
find a party in Peebles, all raised themselves in time to start cycling
early on the Saturday morning. The smart ones who had been before
snatched a lift with Martin up to the top Car Park while the others
struggled their way up the hill.
Once a few runs of the
skills loop were completed the Explorer Scouts split up and tested
themselves on the runs for the rest of the day. At around 4pm, no
serious injuries were reported and all retuned back to Hope Bothy. The
rest of the evening was spent keeping roaring fires going, eating food
and watching films from the comfort of a sleeping bag.
