Autumn 2006 Several Explorers completed the International Group Award and a few took a hike from Blair Atholl.

Thursday 7th September 2006 : First meeting of term
As
is traditional on the first meeting of term, we started with all the
Explorers chatting about what they had been up to over the holidays. We
then divided into four groups which each had to tell the story of some
day on the summer expedition in a format drawn from a hat. We started
off with the first day in the form of a Shakespearean tragedy, the trip
to Aosta in the form of a business presentation and the gorge walking
in the form of a chat show. It was almost better than the expedition
itself.
Thursday 14th September 2006 : Indoor games evening
It
had been intended that this would be an outdoor games evening in the
Hermitage, but the weather was against us. We played some indoor games
instead.
Thursday 21st September 2006 : Equinox bonfire at Bonaly
What did we do this evening?!!
Thursday 28th September 2006 : Annual review
Our
fourth annual review started with Alan giving us a brief review of the
year's activities and Martin presenting the accounts, which was dealt
with in double quick time. Alan then showed a PowerPoint slide show of
a selection of photos from the Summer Expedition. We then divided all
members and guests into teams for another of Martin's fiendish puzzles
and finished with refreshments and chat.
Thursday 5th October 2006 : International group award - planning
David
divided us into three teams, each of whom had to decide upon a country
to be and what we would provide for the Cubs when we had the meetings.
After a good deal of discussion, the three countries were designated as
Canada, China and Jamaica.
Thursday 12th October 2006 : Battle of the sexes
What did we do this evening?!!
20th - 21st October 2006 : Hike from Blair Atholl
A
group of four Explorers left Waverley Station at 9:00 a.m., bound for
Blair Atholl. The train arrived on time and after a visit to the shop
to stock up on energy supplies, they set off towards Old Blair, where
Alan was waiting for them. Various garments and items of kit were left
in his car and together we all set off along the track by the banks of
the Blair Water.
Thursday 26th October 2006 : Murder Mystery Night
We
divided into four groups and the church hall was at once transformed
into the Old Braid Art Gallery. Alan gave each group their
instructions: there was the art gallery management team, the artist and
his entourage, the sculptor and his entourage and the press team. Each
had to create a work of art to exhibit and then devise a short sketch
that would (a) introduce the chief players and (b) spell out the
relationships between members of the group and others. It turned out
that the painter was about to sack his agent and, though he was fancied
by the arts correspondent, had a crush on the art gallery director. He
in turn was on bad terms with the curator of the gallery, who hated
just about everyone else as well. The art critic either disliked
everyone or was disliked by them, though all was not complete
disharmony as the sculptor and her agent did have something going
between them. After all this was explained dramatically, the painter
was found murdered. Each group had to decide who had done the dastardly
deed — and it was of course the arts correspondent in a fit of
passionate rage! And if anyone understands why from the above
information, you are doing better than everyone in the hall that
evening!
Thursday 2nd November 2006 : International Group Award - first meeting with Cubs
The
Explorers managed to meet before even the Cubs started and checked that
they had all that was needed for the evening. The theree Cub Sixes were
then presented with clues, which they had solve to identify the
countries that the Explorers were going to work on with them. The Six
to guess the country went off with the Explorers to learn more about
the country and to prepare flags, passports and posters.
Thursday 9th November 2006 : Incident hike at Bonaly
We
all met at Bonaly and as Martin explained the rules, the leaders
dissolved off into the night. The theme was Casino Royale and the three
groups of agents had to visit three bases to take part in a number of
assignments, thus discovering which group of agents would make it to
Intelligence and which would have to be liquidated. Bearing in mind
that one group found no bases, one group found one base and one group
managed two bases, the outcome was clearcut. Poor Alan sat at his base
all night but nobody made it there at all!
Thursday 16th November 2006 : International Group Award - second meeting with Cubs
The
second meeting with the Cubs started off rather less well as there were
only a few Explorers who turned up on time. Yes, guys, it's a
criticism. Once we were underway, however, with the leaders not flying
by the set of their pants, it all worked brilliantly. The Sixes had to
visit the base for each country and there was food, games and music. At
the end, it was explained that this had all been in aid of the
International Group Award that the Cubs were going to get as well as
the Explorers.
Thursday 23rd November 2006 : Visit to the Gang Show
Two
Explorers had starring roles in this year's Gang Show but, unlike
previous years, there were only a few who turned up to show their
support... a pity as they missed a good show and a brilliant turn by
Lyndsey. Those who didn't show up seemed to have good excuses — several
were already going as Young Leaders with other sections and at least
one was washing his hair that night. Hmmm…
Thursday 30th November 2006 : St Andrews Night
St
Andrews Night started off with us taking a rather cold and unexpected
trip into Morningside to deliver leaflets — slave labour or what?! One
of the girls was harrassed by a little old lady telling her she thought
we were so kind doing the delivery for the church. We then trecked back
to the hall freezing cold to play some daft games, which included
'throw each other into chairs', 'chair-racing' (the fastest sport in
the world, which ended badly for the boys) and, finally, 'extreme tig',
which involved one young man having his top removed by another. In the
end, honour was preserved by the fairer sex. Girls rule!
Thursday 7th December 2006 : A diary of unfortunate events
We
were divided into four random groups and Alan then gave us out some
programmes for this term, together with scrap paper and other helpful
information, to enable us to complete this page for the web site. There
were several bids for tonight and also for the week in October when we
were all on holiday, but at last we set to and this page is the result.
The Girls, having been away for much of the term, started on the summer
expedition page.
Thursday 14th December 2006 : Ice skating at Murrayfield
Twelve
Explorers and two leaders took to the ice. They were all eclipsed by
two girls whose figure skating practice was on that evening and Alan,
who stood on the sidelines, found it difficult to concentrate on the
Explorers. There was a group photo and the year was thus rounded off in
seasonal fashion.
